Education in the Catholic Tradition
St. John Fisher College was founded in 1947 through the efforts of the Most Reverend James E. Kearney, then Bishop of Rochester, New York; Father Hugh Haffey, a Basilian priest from Toronto; and the Congregation of St. Basil.
Named after Saint John Fisher, a Catholic martyr and the Bishop of Rochester in Kent, England, the founders declared the new College would be guided by the educational philosophy of the Basilian Fathers and their motto, "Teach me goodness, discipline, and knowledge."
Members of the Basilian order share a commitment to Catholic values, as well as a dedication to education and community that continues at Fisher today. The Office of Campus Ministry supports the spiritual and religious experiences of all members of the Fisher community and seeks to promote religious expression, peace, justice, and service.
